Huaraz is 3000m (or about 9000 ft) above sea level and has been become an adventure destination because of it’s magnificent location. It is surrounded by some of the most magnificent mountains in the world, and some of the highest with Mount Huascaran topping out at 6768m, and with 22 summits over 6000m (18 000ft). It is the highest mountain range in the world outside of the Himalayas (8000m) in Nepal.
I found myself spending my 35th birthday in the Huascaran National Park trekking up to 5000m.
The hike came to a head when I was greeted by a majestic glacier and almost a 360 degree view of Cordillera Blanca. It was a spectacular panorama and made for an exhilarating and rewarding day. I was happy.
Huaraz, the town, itself is the biggest in the region with a plethora of mountain villages nearby. It welcomes locals and indigenous people selling and buying their goods at the market or on the street. It was a particular busy time with ‘Fiesta’, or the Easter holiday being celebrated.
